I have to cast my vote for Buffalo based on the fact that of all the American hockey teams, they seem to be the furthest north, the closest to canada, and probably the coldest. isn’t that what’s necessary for a hockey team?
I’m also going to pitch the Sabres here, I hope you don’t mind a list!
1. Blue-collar hockey. Buffalo is an old industrial town that is currently re-inventing itself, and good things are starting to happen again in the city.
2. Like Scott said- we’re by Canada! Buffalo is practically an annex of Ontario, and we always sing O Canada at every home game- even if it is between 2 American teams. We like to pay respect and give a shout out to our Canadian fans and neighbors.
3. The team colors…blue and gold. They’re great colors, in my opinion. We finally returned to them after some time with a black/red/white scheme, and don’t worry about the slug logo. It’s been leaked that this is the last season with the Slugalo and we’re swtiching logos/jerseys this summer (2010).
4. Like you said in your video- we’re passionate. We almost lost our team once, and we’ve rallied behind it. We love this team and it isn’t going anywhere for a long time.
5. And it snows here a lot. Last time I checked, hockey was supposed to be a cold sport. So forget Anaheim.
6. Why would the NHL choose Buffalo to host the first Winter Classic if they didn’t know how good the franchise and the fans are?
7. We haven’t won the Stanley Cup yet. All that means is that every win, every goal, and every game is one exciting step closer to that Cup. And just imagine being a Sabres fan when we finally win it for the first time!
8. And then the flipside. We’ve never won the Cup, so when we don’t win it, we aren’t really all that shocked. Why root for a team just because they win?
9. Read up on the history of the team- we’ve done some pretty fun stuff, like kill a bat on the ice, play a game in the fog, play a game outside, and even make up our own fake Japanese draft pick.
10. The team name- Sabres! How many other teams do you know with that name? And when properly done, a 4-foot razor-sharp sword is actually pretty inimidating…
I hope this helped! If you want to read my Sabres stuff, visit sabsnhabs.blogspot.com !
That’s a great comment Steve. Wow, 10 bullet point. I’m going to go ahead and give the Sabres five points for this incredible 10 point comment. Interesting stuff. Make sure to tell your Sabres fans to cast their vote!
I am voting for Buffalo just because I liked your clever song… and they have a cool logo. Dad
Hey John- thanks for liking the comment. How about 10 more bullet points for the Sabres?
1. Ryan Miller- currently one of the top goalies in the league and incredibly exciting to watch. He’s also the rumored starter for the USA Olympic squad in Vancouver this winter. And he’s an American player, and for some reason, it’s always nice to see an American hockey player rise to the top.
2. One of the things I tend to like about the Sabres is their age. Being a Sabres fan, you can’t be called out for “liking a team just because they are Original 6″ or “jumping on the bandwagon of a new team”…Buffalo is just an easily accessible fan base.
3. Unlike most other teams, most Buffalo fans don’t mind if you have a secondary team. I mean…Buffalo teams lose, it’s okay, we understand, as long as the primary allegiance stands with the Blue and Gold. Just don’t pick Toronto, Ottawa, or Boston as your #2.
4. The French Connection! One of Buffalo’s most prolific scoring lines in the 1970s- they still hold many of the records. Made up of Richard Martin, Rene Robert, and Gilbert Perrault.
5. Lindy Ruff- our beloved head coach for 13 years, he got us another Stanley Cup Final appearance, back-to-back Eastern Conference Final appearances, and a President’s trophy. All that is missing is that ever-elusive Cup. We tend to call him “Lucky Lindy” or “Our Fearless Leader”. He’s intense and passionate about the game.
6. I don’t know if you want to count this as a reason, but our venue is pretty nice. HSBC Arena was opened in 1996- so it’s a little over 10 years old, but walking into it you would never know. It’s a great building, and there is nothing like 18,690 Sabres fans cheering.

7. Speaking of cheering, Sabres fans love to yell “Let’s Go, Buffalo!” It’s rhythmically even, and rhymes. How much better could you get?
8. We have THE best third jerseys in the league.

9. The Cross-Border rivalry: Buffalo and Toronto share one of the most heated and underestimated rivalries in the NHL. Only 3 hours separate the two hockey-crazed cities, and each game is host to almost a 50/50 split between the home and visiting fans. And the Sabres have the advantage in this rivalry, winning more games than losing against Toronto.
10. As of right now, the Sabres are arguably one of the most well-balanced teams in the NHL. Our defensive star is our 19 year old, 6′7″ rookie and our offense is evenly spread out in terms of scoring and points.
I know some of those reasons were a little off-the-wall, but there is a lot more to being a fan of a team than the on-ice product!
Go Sabres!

And here’s a shout-out on a newly launched NHL blog site, Hockey Independent.

Because even when Sabres fans from Upstate NY move south we remain steadfast loyal to our boys — even getting the NHL Center Ice package so we can watch our boys and scream “Let’s Go Buffalo” in our living rooms.
